The Foundations of Pickleball Scoring

The Foundations Of Pickleball Scoring

Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States, and it’s easy to see why. This fun, social sport is simple to learn and can be enjoyed by almost anyone at any age and physical ability. If you are new to pickleball, here is an overview of how to score a game to help get you started.

Basics of Scoring

Pickleball games are played to 11 points, and the winning team must win by 2 points. Points are scored by winning a rally, but only the team serving can score points. In other words, the receiving team doesn’t earn points even if they win the rally. The serving team continues to serve until their opponent wins the point. There is no limit on the number of points the serving team can score. A simple game of rock, paper, scissors is an easy way to determine which team serves first.

So how do teams keep score during a game?

Calling Out The Score

Before each serve, the server calls out the score. When calling a score in a singles match, the server will call out the server score followed by the receiver score. In doubles, the server calls out three numbers, the server score, the receiver score, as well as the server number. In doubles, each partner serves during their team’s service and the third number is always 1 or 2. In the event of a scoring dispute, any player can stop the game and ask for correction and clarification before a serve.

Winning a Game

Games are played to 11 points. But to win a pickleball game, the winning team must win by 2 points, so the game can go beyond 11 points if needed. For example, the final score can be 10-12, 11-13, etc. The first team to score the winning point wins the game.
